The FOX network is in an interesting place – and by
interesting I mean dismal.
Last year, they launched three highly anticipated shows
in ‘Terra Nova,’ ‘Touch’ and ‘Alcatraz.’ Only one of those shows is left
standing.
‘Terra Nova’ didn’t make it until the first of the year
and ‘Alcatraz,’ though interesting, hemorrhaged viewers throughout its run.
As for ‘Touch,’ the show isn’t exactly lighting up the
ratings board, but it does boast FOX favorite Kiefer Sutherland – so it will
probably be able to hang around for another season or two.
What’s interesting about FOX is that the network’s
biggest claim to fame these days is the fact that it picked up the
underperforming ‘Fringe’ for a half a season so the show runners can give the
program a proper ending.
Given FOX’s penchant for cancelling first and putting up
with the wrath of angry fans later, this was actually a surprise. I’ve noticed
a lot of fans thanking FOX for doing it – something that is probably akin to
the best PR move the network has made since unceremoniously dumping ‘Doll
House.’
FOX is in an interesting situation. Sunday is still
anchored by comedy cartoons ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘Family Guy,’ but both are well
past their prime.
It’s oldest scripted show is ‘Bones,’ and most fans
believe this will be the last season given how far the quality has dropped
since they forced a baby on the central characters.
There’s always ‘Glee,’ which seems to be more buzz than
substance.
Other than that, though, FOX’s claim to fame is actually
reality shows ‘The X Factor’ and ‘American Idol.’
When it comes to FOX’s new shows, the only one I’m
remotely interested in is ‘The Following.’ The show follows a serial killer who
taunts a FBI profiler (Kevin Bacon) by recruiting an army of deluded followers.
The show also
stars Natalie Zea, Nico Tortorella and Shawn Ashmore.
I never did jump on the ‘New Girl’ train – so the shows
they’re surrounding it with hold no interest for me.
When it comes down to it, I’ll check out ‘The Following’
when it premiers on mid-season Mondays and leave the rest of FOX programming
alone.
What do you think? Is there anything worth watching on
FOX?
