Magic Mike is all beefcake and no substance

I love the smell of beefcake in the morning.

O.K., I love the smell of it anytime. You caught me.

I think that’s why I’m actually considering seeing ‘Magic Mike.’

Yes, I know that just induced snickers from the peanut gallery – but the truth is, I’m shallow. I can be easily manipulated into watching a movie if the cast is good looking enough – and, let’s face it, ‘Magic Mike’ has the cast to end all casts (if looks are the judging factor).

‘Magic Mike’ is the story of a male stripper (Matthew McConaughey) teaching a younger performer (Channing Tatum) how to party, pick up women and make easy money.

Quite frankly, the sweaty six-pack abs that will accompany these two alone should be enough to make any woman – or man, I don’t discriminate – go giddy. They’re just the tip of the iceberg, though.

We also have Alex Pettyfer (Beastly), Joe Manganiello (True Blood), Matt Bomer (White Collar) and Adam Rodriguez (CSI: Miami) to round out the cast. That pretty much means if you can’t find your flavor in this display case you’re not hungry.

I don’t for a second believe that ‘Magic Mike’ is actually going to be a good movie. No, I know it’s essentially going to be ‘Coyote Ugly’ with dudes. You know, all beefcake and no substance.

I’m still leaning towards seeing it, though. That much beefcake in one room – stripping down on a regular basis, no less – is worth the $10 entrance fee.

Now, if this was a movie featuring half naked women (which has been made 100 times over), a certain sector of the population would be complaining that women are being objectified as sexual objects.

I would not be one of them. I feel if you don’t like a movie – or the message behind a movie – then don’t watch it. Don't sit there and complain about it and try to take the enjoyment away from others.

That being said, I kind of get a perverse pleasure out of the notion of ‘Magic Mike.’

Yeah, like I said before, I’m shallow. I can live with it.

‘Magic Mike’ is rated R for pervasive sexual contact, brief graphic nudity, language and some drug use. It opens June 29.

What do you think? Are you going to see ‘Magic Mike’?
