While most of the networks have debuted their fall series –
ABC is still dutifully rolling out a few every week.
This week, sitcoms ‘Happy Endings’ and ‘Don’t Trust the
B---- in Apartment 23’ return to the lineup.
I’m not technically a fan of either show – but I have caught
them both on reruns on occasion.
‘Happy Endings’ is fairly underrated in my opinion and James
Van Der Beek’s cheeky turn as himself is (rightfully) earning him rave reviews.
Given the lukewarm reception for ‘Last Resort’ and ‘666 Park
Avenue’ – and the curious ratings drop of ‘Nashville’ – ABC will probably be
happy to welcome back some known quantities.
DVD and Blu-Ray
While last week saw very little of interest in mass release,
this week is exactly the opposite.
Keira Knightley and Steve Carrell join forces in the
underrated ‘Seeking a Friend For the End of the World.’
A movie that is clearly aimed towards women – and did surprisingly
well at the box office – stripper fare ‘Magic Mike’ is also available.
Horror fans can check out ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’ –
which bombed. I’m curious what this means for other mash-up movies – like ‘Pride
and Prejudice With Zombies.’ I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
The final movie of note is ‘Madea’s Witness Protection.’
Given the fact that most critics lambasted Tyler Perry’s performance in ‘Alex
Cross’ – he’s probably going to be happy his Madea franchise is still viable.
For television, the third season of ‘Fantasy Island,’ the
second season of ‘Happy Endings,’ the first season of ‘Lost Girl’ and the
fourth season of ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ all bow on DVD.
Music
Last week was a down week for music, too. This week isn’t
that much better.
The bubbly Colbie Caillat debuts the 12-song ‘Christmas in
the Sand.’ I have to be honest. Christmas music in October gives me a headache.
Billy Ray Cyrus trots out his mullet for ‘Change My Mind’ –
a 10-song compilation that proves he’s still desperately trying to make himself
musically relevant.
Finally, Taylor Swift’s ‘Red’ hits with 16 songs – most of
which are already on the bestselling list over at iTunes. Personally, I’m a fan
of the catchy ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.’
Video Games
The video game front is uninspired and boring. For kids,
there’s ‘Just Dance – Disney Party.’
For bored adults there’s ‘Medal of Honor Warfighter.’
Neither title exactly thrills me.
Movies
The theaters are relatively busy this week.
The long-delayed ‘Silent Hill: Revelation’ hits theaters
Thursday. I liked the first movie, but all the delays that plagued this one don’t
exactly point to a great flick. Still, this is my favorite horror movie game
franchise – so I’m willing to check it out. Plus, this stars Sean Bean and Kit
Harrington - - this will only mean something to ‘Game of Thrones’ fans.
On Friday, ‘Cloud Atlas’ hits theaters. The film is an
exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the
past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and
an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution. It stars
Hallie Berry and Tom Hanks, as well as Hugo Weaving, Hugh Grant and Susan
Sarandon.
Also on Friday, the Chelsea Handler comedy ‘Fun Size’ hits.
She says it will be hilarious. She also said her television show would be hilarious.
I love ‘Chelsea Lately’ – but Handler should stay away from acting.
Finally, Gerard Butler stars in what looks like an
absolutely ridiculous surfing movie called ‘Chasing Mavericks.’ It’s essentially
‘Gleaming the Cube’ – but with surf boards.
What do you think? What are you looking forward to most this
week?
