CW announces early renewals of ‘Supernatural’ and ‘The Vampire Diaries’

The network frenzy of renewal announcements began in earnest today when The CW announced that ‘Supernatural,’ ‘90210,’ and ‘The Vampire Diaries’ would officially be returning next season.

This will be the eighth season for ‘Supernatural’ – which is starting to feel a little old despite the likeability of both leads – and the third season for ‘The Vampire Diaries’ – which is The CW’s top rated show.

The ‘90210’ reboot will be heading into its fifth season – but any buzz it ever had has long since drained away.

That leaves the fates of ‘Ringer,’ ‘Gossip Girl,’ ‘Hart of Dixie,’ ‘Nikita,’ and ‘The Secret Circle’ left to be decided.

If I was a betting person, ‘Hart of Dixie’ and ‘Nikita’ will get the axe. While ‘The Secret Circle’ is television at its lamest, the supernatural is in and the show makes a good companion piece with ‘The Vampire Diaries.'

As for ‘Gossip Girl,’ the show doesn’t get great ratings but much of the cast – especially Blake Lively and Leighton Meester – get a great deal of attention. I expect that ‘Gossip Girl’ will be picked up for one more season – which is all the stars of the show are signed on for.

I think most of the stars wish the show would end now – as pretty much all of them have expressed an interest in doing outside projects – but I don’t think they’re going to get their wish. This will give show runners a chance to reunite the program’s two signature duos in Serena and Dan and Chuck and Blair before actors Penn Badgley and Chace Crawford fade into obscurity.

That leaves ‘Ringer’ – a show that had an up-and-down first season. The ratings for this show weren’t great either, but show star Sarah Michelle Gellar has a devoted following. As a fan of the show, I hope we get at least one more season – I’m just not sure it will happen.

I don’t have an inkling either way on the fate of ‘Ringer.’ I actually wouldn’t be surprised if it’s cancelled or picked up.

I guess, like everyone else, we’ll have to wait and see.

What do you think? Did The CW make the right decision in renewing ‘Supernatural’ and ‘The Vampire Diaries’?
